The best banh mi I've ever had . . .

An overnight-chilled, smooshed flat and partly sogged up (from adjacent water bottle) banh mi bo nuong (charbroiled beef Vietnamese sandwich) . . .

Banh mi nom nom
. . . but as a disclaimer, this is after in the midst of an intense dayhike/deathmarch up and down the Vivian Creek Trail to the summit of San Gorgonio Mountain. I guess hunger, and high-attitude-induced delirium, does make the best sauce afterall.

Of course, I had the infinitely tastier, fresh version straight out of Banh Mi My Tho (my favorite V-wich shop) too. And it was all kinds of delicious with the peanutty spread, pickled veggies, fresh 'n cool cucumber, slightly sweet BBQ'd beef and the occasion spicy slice of chili pepper smacked between crispy-on-outside, tender/chewy-on-inside baguette.

And at $2.50 per 'wich, it's super recession-friendly too (this sandwich actually lasted me two sittings during the hike!)

Next time I'll just remember to keep it away from the liquids in my backpack . . .

That was only $2.50? Man! I love bahn mi, especially with extra peanut sauce.

is it better than tip top? i can't wait until they open the place in rosemead. banh mi is a good snack for a hike because it's light and fulfilling with all the necessary food groups. nice pic there.

Congrats on finishing that hike! I would have joined you, but alas, it would have been dark by the time I made it to the summit. I bet that sandwich tasted good then.

I'll have to give this spot a try after my horrible experience @ Banh Mi Che Cali.

@mattatouille, never had Tip Top yet -- but given its proximity, we can do a side-by-side comparison when it opens ;)

@WC, that sandwich was heavenly (and not because I was almost 12,000 feet above sea level either) but alas, I had to eat fast and move on before altitude sickness sets in.

@CityNitz, really? Banh Mi Che Cali is actually one of my Plan B v-wich joints (and my fave of the "chain"y ones) but yeah, totally give My Tho a try. Their meatball skewers are very popular too!
